It's that time of year
when we find our calendars getting filled with cookie decorating, ugly sweater parties, shopping for gifts, school programs, and Christmas pageants, just to name a few. There is often so much hustle and bustle between Thanksgiving and New Year’s that it can be difficult for children to see what we are really celebrating: Christ’s birth.
If you find yourself looking for ways to keep your family focused on Jesus this Christmas season here are a few activities you may want to consider:
Make an Advent wreath and light the candles each week.
Mark this time of Advent with a special Advent Calendar
Read books about Jesus’ birth
Sing Christmas songs and talk about how we tell the story of Jesus’ birth through those songs
Have a party to celebrate Jesus’ birthday. Ask your child what they could do to make that party about Jesus
Look for ways to celebrate Jesus’ birthday in the community. How can you spread Christ’s love by loving and serving others?
Read the Christmas story – perhaps even act it out as a family
Attend worship together and ask them what part they liked best
Place a nativity scene in your home – if you have one they can play with I promise you won’t regret it. I love seeing all the ways children can incorporate Baby Jesus into their play.
