It's that time of year

when we find our calendars getting filled with cookie decorating, ugly sweater parties, shopping for gifts, school programs, and Christmas pageants, just to name a few. There is often so much hustle and bustle between Thanksgiving and New Year’s that it can be difficult for children to see what we are really celebrating: Christ’s birth.

If you find yourself looking for ways to keep your family focused on Jesus this Christmas season here are a few activities you may want to consider:

  • Make an Advent wreath and light the candles each week.

  • Mark this time of Advent with a special Advent Calendar

  • Read books about Jesus’ birth

  • Sing Christmas songs and talk about how we tell the story of Jesus’ birth through those songs

  • Have a party to celebrate Jesus’ birthday. Ask your child what they could do to make that party about Jesus

  • Look for ways to celebrate Jesus’ birthday in the community. How can you spread Christ’s love by loving and serving others?

  • Read the Christmas story – perhaps even act it out as a family

  • Attend worship together and ask them what part they liked best

  • Place a nativity scene in your home – if you have one they can play with I promise you won’t regret it. I love seeing all the ways children can incorporate Baby Jesus into their play.

Your Sibling in Christ,

Susie
