Pentecost is often described as the birthday of the church—but it is also a reminder that the Holy Spirit does not stay inside church walls.
In Numbers 11, God’s Spirit spills beyond the expected leaders. In John 20, Jesus breathes the Spirit into fearful disciples hiding behind locked doors. Both stories remind us that the Spirit works through ordinary people in ordinary places.
This year, I found myself seriously considering retirement after 36 years of teaching leadership development at Fox Valley Technical College. As I weighed the pros and cons, I realized something important: teaching in manufacturing firms is not simply my career—it is also my ministry. I realized I can continue touching lives through encouraging, teaching, and developing people in their workplaces. Once I recognized that as God’s calling, the decision became much clearer.
This Pentecost Sunday, we’ll celebrate the many ways God works through our daily vocations—through healthcare workers, teachers, tradespeople, parents, volunteers, retirees, and countless others whose quiet faithfulness serves the world every day.
Where might the Holy Spirit already be working through you?
