swendler1

The RIC committee is excited to present an opportunity for our congregation to engage in 2 of our core pillars of Listening and Learning with a guest speaker from Wartbug Seminary who will be joining us in February! Jamil Zoughbi is an Arab Christian Palestinian who lived 35 years under the oppression of the Israeli government, and is today getting his Masters of Divinity at Wartburg seminary in Iowa. Jamil Zoughbi is married and has two children.  He is originally from Jerusalem &  Bethlehem, the Holy Land.  For the past ten years he taught the Christian religion and served in the Greek Catholic Church as deacon among the assembly.

His Presentation:  How Theology Can Hurt This presentation is a pure self-experience as an Arab Christian Palestinian who lived 35 years under the oppression of the Israeli government.  One year ago, Jamil was one of the voiceless people that today he seeks to represent as he educates Americans on the complexities of the Holy Land conflict. The main points of this presentation are:

  • Map of Palestine -  what is the geographic of the Holy land

  • History - a short introduction of the start of the conflict history

  • 5 types of citizenship - The types of identification that Israel gives for the people who live on that land.

  • Holy for who - the background of the term Holy land, as it is holy for Jews, Muslims and Christians, but the question remains: Holy for who?

  • Arab Christian Palestinian Voice - learn how Arab Christian Palestinians are living and where their voices are in this conflict.

  • Where is God - learn about the oppression of the Arab Christian Palestinian, and how Arab Christian Palestinians are living under the Israeli occupation.

  • Terms and theologies that Hurt - learn more about the impact of theologies and terms on the reading of the bible for Christian Palestinians.

  • Israel between ancient times and now: To differentiate between political Israel and the biblical Israel.

  • The human connection, learn how your voice can be a power for Justice, peace and change.
