Let your light shine before others! Matthew 5:16

I believe that God puts opportunities in our paths for a reason.  Today, I am writing to offer an opportunity to be healthy, let your Christ the King light shine in the community, and exercise generosity.

Each year in May, a local event called the Sole Burner happens at City Park in Appleton.  It is a 5K run/walk that raises funds for the American Cancer Society.  Whether you are a survivor yourself or have supported someone with cancer, each and every one of us has been touched by cancer in some way.

Here’s where the light comes in.

As an oncology nurse, I’ve always tried to show the light to others encouraging people with cancer that they always have hope.  I’ve participated in the Sole Burner for many years and have utilized many of the resources that American Cancer Society provides.  Funds raised support the American Cancer Society‘s fight to end cancer.  Specifically, these dollars are used to make a difference by funding critical research, educating people on prevention and early detection, and providing free information and services to help people facing cancer today-including transportation, lodging, wigs, support programs and more.

Then, in 2021 and again in 2025, I joined the club and became a cancer survivor myself.  This year, I was given the opportunity to represent survivors at this year’s Sole Burner event.   During Lent, we were encouraged to try some new things.  Although outside of my comfort zone, I embraced the chance to speak for those who are surviving and those who have passed from cancer.

More light.

This year, Christ the King has formed a team and will be represented at this year’s event.  Penni Pautz is our team captain.  Here are some ways to participate:

-        Sign up to run or walk.  The Sole Burner this year is the morning of May 9th.  A kids run starts at 8:15 am with the 5K run/walk starting promptly at 9:00 am.  We will take a team photo at a time to be announced closer to the event.  The easiest way to sign up is online at soleburner.org.  You can choose CtK from the list of fundraiser teams and will receive a T-shirt with the CtK logo on the back if you sign up by April 11th.  You can continue to sign up until the day of the event, but won’t be guaranteed a shirt.

-        Consider making a pledge to help us meet our goal of raising $1000 in funds.  Pledge sheets are available on the welcome desk at church.

-        Keep the team and all those affected by cancer in your prayers.

Please direct any questions to Penni or myself.  We would be happy to have you join the team!

With grace and gratitude,

Lisa Wright
